Did you know that “to wag” means to skip school in Australia?  Or that “thek” is the name of the large school bag children carry in Switzerland? 

Each country has its own vocabulary and not knowing the right word can be both amusing and disconcerting.  Here is a brief selection from a few countries but you will find more comprehensive lists on the Global Educational Explorertm.

Australia

Bubbler - a drinking fountain
Dob - to tell tales
Footy - rugby union or rugby league football
KLA - key learning area

Switzerland

Arbitur - national qualification taken at 18
Gemeinde - the community you live in
Gymnasium - an academic high school
Mittagspause - lunch break

UK

Break - recess
GCSE - national exams taken at 16 years old
Jumper - sweater
Public school - posh private school

USA

Awesome - good
Jock - an athlete
Mad - angry
SAT - multiple choice exam taken for college entry
